About

MARIETTEprints was conceived in the spirit of and in homage to the great eighteenth-century collector, scholar and dealer, Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-1774)

MARIETTEprints offers for sale a wide range of original, autograph prints from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. By original prints, we mean handmade engravings, etchings, woodcuts, mezzotints, linocuts etc., made by the artists themselves or by printmakers interpreting the design of an artist. Often, artists and printmakers were the same person. At other times, artists employed or went into partnership with printmakers to make their work more widely available. Just as often, the original artist may not necessarily have approved the reproduction of his work, especially prior to the introduction of copyright laws in the modern era.

MARIETTEprints was founded by David Maskill, print scholar and collector. He has been collecting prints for over thirty years. He studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London before returning to his native New Zealand to take up an academic position at Victoria University of Wellington and where he taught from 1993-2019. In 2004, he was the recipient of a Harold Wright scholarship to spend six months in the Print Room at the British Museum. It was during this period of immersion in one of the greatest print collections in the world, that he developed his passion for and expertise in prints. In 2000, he initiated an Honours-level course in the history of prints which culminated in an end-of-year exhibition and publication. He has published scholarly articles on prints and print dealing and collecting in leading journals such as Print Quarterly.
